The First Five Pages: What Agents Actually Read For

Daniel Oyelaran, Senior Editor · · 7 min read

Voice, orientation, and a reason to turn the page. Everything else in your opening is negotiable.

An agent's first five pages are a triage exercise. They are reading for competence, then voice, then appetite.

Orientation matters more than mystery. A reader who does not know who is speaking, where they are, or roughly when, will not stay curious — they will stay confused.

The most reliable improvement to any opening is deletion. Begin closer to the moment something changes.
